Structures | 2014-2015

Structure is a fundamental notion, both tangible and intangible, referring to the recognition, observation, nature, and permanence of patterns and relationships between entities. It may exist as an object — such as an architectural structure — or as an attribute, such as the structure of society itself. Structures shape human experience through systems organized by characteristic patterns of relationships.

The photographic series Structures may initially appear as an exercise in street photography. In reality, the series represents a carefully researched project that led Riccardo Wolfgang through various cities in the United Kingdom, Spain, and Italy. These urban portraits, photographed in London and several Italian cities, use structure as both subject and metaphor. The work reflects on the idea that the systems surrounding us — people, places, language, architecture, and social institutions — are all products of cultural intersections and continuous transformation.
