Portrait Enigma | 2014
Portrait Enigma did not begin as a deliberate series of portraits, but rather emerged organically through exploration. It became a spontaneous collection of unique individuals whom Riccardo Wolfgang encountered and, for one reason or another, felt compelled to photograph.
As the series evolved, Riccardo realized that the narrative often transcended both the photographer and even the subject portrayed. The work reflects recurring themes within his practice — synchronicity, chance encounters, and the spontaneous events that seem to align through forces larger than ourselves.
The series developed around the idea that each subject must exist within a context that reveals the complexity of their character. These works are therefore more than portraits — they become fragments of memory, atmosphere, and personal history.
